I think I've narrowed down my problem to being a corrupt HD but I'm looking for confirmation. The system just started popping up with random references to memory locations and hard drive errors over the last few weeks. It says to run the chkdisk utility but any attempt to do so results in a failed test due to some type of corruption. I've attempted to format the hard drive and reinstall only to be met with 'Windows is unable to complete this install due to <some error> with the partition.'

Sorry I cannot remember specific messages but if any of you have run into a similar problem before let me know. I'm about 99% sure it's a dead HD.

Your drive is having firmware corruption issues at the physical hardware level and it's not worth to have it fix. Just replace the drive and it's cheaper. This is usually caused by bad sectors at the beginning and until the growth defect list get full; that means your drive is going down the hill and you should replace it.
