Now I dont smoke it, and never have but I saw this in the news and thought it interesting.

OTTAWA - Jean Chrétien drew applause and a few whoops of joy at a fundraising dinner Tuesday night when he said that legislation decriminalizing possession of marijuana in Canada would soon be announced.

Here is the link.

basically anything under 15grams will now just be a quick ticket it'll help speed up the court systems etc.

For anyone growing pot now the jail time has been increased to 14 yrs max now I believe

If I'd know this was newsworthy, I would have posted it long ago. I keep close tabs on the weed argument here.

The upside to this is that decriminalization will likely cut back on the violence, etc, since "medical marijuana" is currently being hammered out at set prices. I think it's about CDN$300 an ounce, and it's not premium grade either. Making <15g a ticket would let the suffering get their reefer from a trusted third-party for much cheaper, and probably better grade too.

Sure is going to make cross-border shopping a bitch though. :disgust:

Why should it? there are already many legal differences between US & canada, and that doesnt cause any slowdowns.. why should this? it's not like its going to be legal and the whole country is going to turn into a smoke-stack.

i dont see an increase in trafficking.. its not like joe & bob are going to cross the border with <1/2 oz anyways.. they'd be carrying a lot more, which is already strictly enforced...

Oh, you see though, Bush has already given his endorsement to "keep Canadian drugs out of the hands of American youth" - so you see, we're all criminals here now. Everyone is a suspect. Anyone can have it now, not just their preferred stereotypes. I've crossed in the same vehicle twice within a week. The first time, I'd shaved early that morning and was dressed nicely in a shirt & tie (job interviews). The second time, I had two days' growth, my comfortable gear on, and sunglasses. Guess which time I got waved through, and which time I got pulled over, escorted by armed military personnel to a holding area, and the entire vehicle searched from bumper to bumper?

Remember post-9/11 border crossings?

All. Over. Again. :|

I thought Vancouver was already overrun with pot smokers.
Something like the police force has a relaxed stance regarding passive drug use.

Canada has been backing down as of late. The once sure bill is now being slowed. The US is really putting pressure on them to not do this. They have made threats about border checks and slowdowns. They are trying to point out that it will only hurt them if they decriminalize it.

That said, screw the US on this issue. When are they going to learn? It's Canada and they can do what they like. The opinion polls in Canada are believed to show a majority of people favor decrimilizing. Just because US lobbist dont want weed legal shouldn't stop another nation from making it legal.

I think in 10 years when the US is one of a handful of countries still arresting folks for "soft" drug possession, people might wise up. Heck, the US might wise up after they see tourist dollars going across the border because they can light up over there. It's fairly decriminilized in Europe now. But, if you watched the UK when they decided to lessen soft drug restrictions, you'll see that again, the US were being bullies. The US kept telling them not to do it. So, right after 9-11 when the US is tied up searching for clues and answers, the UK decided it was a good time to go ahead and lessen restrictions while the US had more important things to deal with. Why do the US government officals feel the need to try and impose their beliefs on the world? Maybe, just maybe, other people have realized drugs can be used recreationally by rational adults. Drugs can be used to enhance an event or time in someone's life. "No, this can't be," says the anti-marijuana Senator as he orders another beer at the fund raiser held by cotton farmer lobbyist.

I should move to Canada. Far less dumb people there.

Are you sure about that?

Well, I don't think the average Canadian is smarter, per se, than the average American, but the legalization of pot is a good idea and I really hope the government goes through with it (and no, I don't smoke).
