The days when people thought only heavy Cheech-and-Chong pot smokers suffered cognitive consequences may be over. A study in The Journal of Neuroscience says even casual marijuana smokers showed significant abnormalities in two vital brain regions important in motivation and emotion.
“Some of these people only used marijuana to get high once or twice a week,” said co-author Hans Breiter, quoted in Northwestern University’s Science Newsline. Breiter hailed the study as the first to analyze the effects of light marijuana use.

“People think a little recreational use shouldn’t cause a problem, if someone is doing OK with work or school,” he said. “Our data directly says this is not the case.”
Poor pot heads. Quit while you are a"head".

Binge drinking instead is a-ok then?

Thankfully I don't do either, even though pot is legal in WA now.

Thread title misleading

I'd have to know a lot more about the study and it's methodology, but it seems like a ridiculously small sample group from which to draw any conclusions. Not to mention they did on a group whose brains are still growing/changing at a significant rate.

Of course it's causing changes but whether the changes actually cause problems and/or life issues is controlled by the attitude of the individual.

GTFO with your crazy ideas of "facts" and "looking at the evidence."

It's always funny to me how people keep linking to these small tests to prove Marijuana is bad for you. There has not been any proven long term effects, alcohol is worse for you. Who cares, smoke, drink, whatever you do in your house is your own business.

:colbert: I suppose next, you're going to try to claim that whatever consenting adults do in the privacy of their own house or bedroom is also their own business...and not the business of the government.

Marijuana stimulates neurogenesis, it is not surprising that it causes abnormal brain scans.

I can't smoke anymore. Feel weird when I do. It wasn't always like that. I felt happy with it. Perhaps a certain amount of smoke sessions you're reaction to it changes do to your brain changing

If it's not alcohol, pot, some other street drug or that other drug that you are addicted to: Religion, somebody is always stuffing their brain full of harmful shit or bullshit. Judge not lest ye be judged.

Having said that, the only one I've imbibed from that list is alcohol. I like the taste of beer with bratwurst, or frankfurters especially a hoppy beer for the contrast in flavor. But I don't drink enough to get drunk or buzzed, just 1 or 2 with a meal.

A conversation with your average pot smoker will tell you all you need to know about it's effects, but only if you don't have brain damage yourself.

The question is does pot damage their brain or did pre-existing brain damage cause them to make the poor decision to smoke in the first place? The world may never know, nor care.

This reefer madness shit is getting old. This study is BS, bought and paid for by the Nancy Grace Nazis of the world who would love nothing more than to have a camera in your house 24/7 and a megaphone to yell at you about how to live your life.

What a sad, pathetic nanny state thread this is. Stop shilling for alcohol and big pharma please, thanks.

Wow. Just, wow.

You think the news that pot is actually bad for you is a big surprise?

Put down the pipe, dude.

Enjoy your mind and body the way it was made to be enjoyed...as is. You dont need to mis-shape your brain to enjoy life.

yeah the study has no conclusions, it's just a starting point to know what to look for.

Plus these people have started smoking during a phase in which the brain is still shaping itself. There's a reason any drug including alcohol is banned below certain ages.

"The conclusions were modest in the paper — we never say marijuana causes these changes," Gilman said, who's a neuroscientist with a Ph.D. from Brown University. "The media may have given that impression in headlines, but the study doesn't show causation."

what do you know...
