PULLMAN, Wash. Guns drawn, police serving a marijuana search warrant at a Pullman apartment found green leafy plant material.
It just wasn't the kind they normally find in residences in the college town.

It was tomato plants.

Eight officers entered the apartment where a landlord reported seeing possible drug growing paraphernalia, including a specialized plant growing lamp inside a closet. That gave police probable cause to get a search warrant last weekend.

Pullman Police Commander Chris Tennant says he empathizes with the three startled roommates. However, he says it's the department's duty to investigate all credible complaints of marijuana growing operations.

Grow pot somewhere else in the house.

Set out tomato plants as bait.

Cops respond, see tomato plants, don't search further to find pot plants

Leave you alone next time someone reports "plant growing" as they already think it's tomato stuff again

I wonder what else the landlord saw as "possible drug growing paraphernalia" besides the lamp, because that doesn't seem like it should be enough to bust in to someones house.

1.) Landlord = Idiot
2.) Cops like to overreact on anything where "OMG DRUGS" are involved
3.) Because of 1 & 2, no investigation is done, just legalized breaking and entering.

Come on. Seriously. This is probably the only college apartment in all of existence that has tomato plants growing in the closet.

Possible paraphernalia and a lamp... pretty broad and open. The entire police department should be under investigation.

Hehe, true true... though I didn't assume they were college students (the article just mentioned that they live in a college town). Still though, that seems more an assumption than real evidence.

And so should the judge who gave the ok for a search warrant.

Growing tomato in the closet to keep them gigantic tomato hornworm out FTW.

Edit: oops links to a tobacco hornworm by mistake. But they are the same anyway, I guess they can be grouped as Tomacco Hornworm

So having a plant growing light is probable cause for a search? Wouldn't that give the cops a free ticket to raid just about every greenhouse out there?

Actually that would not work. Cops use a warrant as an excuse to search the maximum area they legally can.
