I was wondering what the proper procedure is for alerting others of potential virus related subjects might be. I realize there has to be some kind of balance struck between wasting bandwidth with hoax reports and redundant postings, and actually posting usefull, timely information that might benefit the members, but I am not sure what might be the best way.

In the last 24 hours I have received 6 copies of the w32.sobig.a@mm virus, a virus that symantec only posted a definition for on Jan. 10th, and still lists as a low threat. What forum is the correct and best place to post a warning alerting others of what might be a potential problem?

really why does this not exsist?

I have to agree, I think it would be one of the most beneficial categories in the forum....

Edit: Added a poll for this in Off Topic... link

Feh. It would amount to nothing more than a bazillion repeats of the same hoaxes and stale virus warnings. There are so many other better and free resources. It would come to little use.

I disagree, I don't think the point is to post every alert and warning, but put all the current security related questions in one place. Browse thru OS, Software, and OT, etc and you'll find a collection of posts everyday that deal with various security firewall questions (do I need one?), AV questiions (do I need one, which one, etc), Web server security, etc. I really think a centralized forum for all of this would be beneficial.

You're right, Bill -- and it's the same questions/answers time after time after time after time ...

Maybe a specific virus/security forum would be the answer -- nobody seems to be able to search for them as they're repeatedly posted in OT, TS, or Software...
