First Laptop for college, damn, it's fine, specs are as follows:

P4 2.4 GHz
60GB HDD
512 Megs of PC2700 Ram
24x CDrw/DVD combo drive
15" SXGA+ Screen
Integrated 54g Wireless Lan
3x USB 2.0 Ports
1x Firewire port
32 Meg Vid. Card (won't need it THAT much :) )
and SUPPOSED to be XP Pro, key word supposed to be.

Here's my story.

Did a CTO (Creation station computer) on an HP pavillion ze5400 series laptop. With the above specs, would've been and still will be sweet for my first laptop. I go to best buy, pick it up, get the techs to "check it out" that was my first mistake. Shoulda insisted on looking myself, at the store. Get home and boot up, Home edition!!

I know it's not that big of a deal, but damn, i paid the extra 75 bucks for Pro, and what do i get? Home!

Now i gotta take another trip back to the best buy....*grumble grumble*

But still, daaaaaaaaaaaaamn, it's gonna be sweet.

Make sure they give you something off for your troubles, at least a gift card or something.

why did you pay extra for pro? I got home on my laptop and it looks exactly the same as pro. haven't found anything I couldn't do on home that I could do on pro either. if I didn't get such a good deal on winxp pro i would have gotten home.

I thought I remember reading somewhere that a lot of schools are requiring XP Pro on students computer.

Why? So it's easier for them to setup ftp and webserver?

Why did you pay $75 extra for pro? As an incoming student you qualify to buy it for like $20, full version.

I've got 6 or 7 copies of NFR XP Pro laying around, some because I worked a computer retail job, others because of my student status... most of them I paid $0 for. For someone tech-savy enough to be designing his own laptop, you really should visit HD or just surf for deals more. You'll understand once you get to college... but in the end, a dollar saved is a dollar that can be spent on beer.

Differences

  • Remote Desktop
  • Ability to Join Domains
  • Encrypting File Service (EFS)
  • System Restore
  • IIS, SMP, Multi Language Support

If what Elfenix says is true, I could see some Schools wanting Pro then.

whadda mean?

domain authentication

plenty of schools are requiring pro

back when i did sales of this stuff i could tell you all sorts of stuff using the handy chart provided by MS

from MS:
Use advanced security features
Security features such as IP Security (IPSec) and digital certificates may be required in some environments to access certain resources. These features are built into Windows XP Professional.

Unfortunately, GVSU is not one school that offers it for 20 bucks, 75 bucks extra was the cheapest i could get it, supposedly installed. GVSU suggested we get pro, because of the easier networking capabilities. Plus, my family is computer illiterate, and with the remote desktop feature, they can get help w/o me coming home.

Agreed, the TP 600E was one of my favorite laptops.
