I've been thinking about Taft and and Obama. I think I know how Teddy Roosevelt's progressive Republicans must have felt about the Taft administration. They saw Taft as the torch carrier for the progressive cause only to watch him govern as a listless corporatist flunky. I guess the difference is that the progressives of that era managed to get some of their agenda passed under Roosevelt whereas this time around it never got out of the gate. The progressives of that era bolted the party. I don't see that happening this time though modern progressives/liberals would certainly find a better match in the Green Party than in the Democratic Party.
