Don't know the exact reason why we can't post them in the AT forums, (i.e. I don't know if its because the mods and admins don't think the members are mature enough to handle it, or if its a user bandwidth/forum resource thing).

and I'm sure this has all been tossed around before, but...

If its a maturity thing - whats the reasoning behind that? Arstechnica forums and I think HardOCP's forums allow picture posting, and I don't see problems there. And it its a worry, then perhaps only give posting priveledges once you become a senior member or golden member, to show responsibility.

If its a resource thing, I don't see how it could affect the forum servers in any way, it would be limited by the users bandwidth only, since anandtech wouldn't be hosting the images. And if you added an item in preferences, so you can disable viewing images if you are on a slow connection, that would help solve that as well.

:( just some little nuances that I like about other forums like Arstechnica that I wish were implemented here, because these forums are my home

The only problem I see would be that some people host images on slow-ass servers. Which irritates people and sends them rushing for the refresh button. Or just starts hanging up everything since the AnandTech servers have to stop and wait on the slow-ass server to load the picture.

Of course since I know exactly jackschitt about the way those things work I could be very very wrong.

Well, I for one am glad we aren't allowed to post images here. What if some bastard decided to link to a huge 700kb image? I mean I know a picture is worth a thousand words, and that the forums is all about getting information across, but I'd like to have the option to see the image or not...

=)

I know why :) Because people abuse the hell out of it, and it's something we will never turn on :). We keep a respectable forum here :).

I guess that says something about the caliber of members we have here at anandtech. I've never seen problems on other hardware forums, like arstechnica and others. I guess that's a sad thing.

but - in the 2+ years i've been here, its never been turned on. so that means it must have been turned on long before then, and perhaps abused then? guess a second shot isn't in order, 2 years is a long time for people to mature. maybe I'll have to start hangin' out at ars more often. :(

as to the argument about waiting for images, like I said, if you dont want to wait, you can turn off images in your profile or something.

and if you only allowed say, golden members to post images, I gurantee you'd see few problems.

It was turned on but after several trolls like puto posted porn the ability to post images here was removed. That was around 2 years ago.

then I must have just missed it because I've been coming to the boards for a little over 2 years.

and are we so closed minded that we can't give second chances?

most trolls are weeded out by the time they reach goldem member status anyway. and I hate to keep bringing it up, but arstechnica has images, and its a godsend

i am glad that its disabled, and will never be turned on. no matter what you say, there will be people who abuse it. and it sucks for people on slow connections to have to wait for images to load, especially when the images are also on slow servers. i have seen many other forums that allow images and they are terrible. people post huge uncompressed images, and sometimes the page just stalls because their servers are too slow.

if you want to associate an image with your post, use the link button above to add in an image, and if people want to see the image they can click it, and if they dont, they can just ignore it. on a forum this large, it works better the way it is.

[edit]i also forgot to mention that just because a member has reached a certain amount of posts does not mean that they are responsible and will not abuse the feature.[/edit]

that is until I become rich and famous and buy out anandtech and then I get to make the decisions around here!

just kidding.

oh well, it was worth a shot. maybe someday it'll be reconsidered, kinda sad that it seems a bad apple or two spoils it for the other 10,000 members
