Is it a bad idea to go if I don't have a clue how to speak Japanese? My wife is half Japanese and she doesn't speak it either.

As I said before, as long as you can pronounce words fairly well, you'll do OK. There are online guides that can teach you the pronunciation for romaji (romanization of their words) which is all over the place).

Haven't seen any yet. The vast majority of vehicles on the road are super compacts (K-cars?) and the odd luxury car. It's rare to see a car that is dirty, as well.

Weird thing I experienced: in Osaka, people stand on the right-hand side of the escalator, but in Tokyo and Kyoto, people stand on the left. Stair etiquette still eludes me, though arrows are usually present to indicate prescribed directions.

For anyone who plans on going to Japan for the first time, bring your debit card or lots of cash. Japan is a cash culture. Well, they prefer physical things over the virtual. So, a lot of places only take cash, even the all-important train stations.

Akihabara is a must see, as someone already posted. I would check out the new Yamaha store on the Ginza. I think Ueno is where the motorcycle district is.
