Posting from the new lab :)

Just went down to the open PC lab on campus for the first time since they replaced all of the computers earlier this summer - these things are nice 🙂 :

P4 @ 2.8GHz
512MB RAM (finally! enough memory. 128 on the old machines just wasn't cutting it)
80GB HDD
DVD / CDRW combo drive
Floppy disk drive
PCMCIA slot
stereo sound
6 USB ports
15" LCD screen

All in one convenient, stand-alone package. The whole thing isn't much bigger than just the old CRT monitors we used to use down here.

Good point. But they never really "upgraded" the old ones, either - just replaced them after a couple of years. The systems that were in here were PIII-600s or so with 128MB RAM.

LCD monitors? Jack them!

you'd have to haul off the entire system - it's all one piece. Not that that would be too terribly difficult, either, except for the fact that they're all locked down.

I doubt that. The lab systems maybe, but not all of them. When we started replacing staff systems a year ago, the really old stuff was just hauled away; the not-so-old stuff was inheritted by some of the newer staff members. I don't think anything was actually returned to Gateway.
