Posting Discrimination Against AOL Dial-Up?

I moved to Washington, DC a few weeks ago and I haven't had any reason to post a message on Anandtech until now. I've been using AOL Dial-Up at home because I simply cannot afford broadband for the 3 months that I will be here (so before I get any wisecracks about being an AOL user, let me tell you that I'm not too happy about it either). I can post messages on the forum at work, which is on a T3, but I cannot post messages when I dial-up from home using my AOL account. I get the following message: "You have been forbidden to post/reply or edit a message in these forums." I am logged in to my subscriber account and I can view the forums, I just can't post or send PMs. I can really use some help that does not involve switching IPs. Thanks in advance.

I've sent two emails to moderator@anandtech.com and subscriber@anandtech.com and I have not received a response to my problem from them.

iamshady,

YOU are welcome on AnandTech. AOL is NOT! AOL is banned from AnandTech as BOTH an email address and as an ISP. This means that, regardless of your registered email address, you cannot post on AnandTech while you are logged onto AOL.

This action was necessary because, awhile back, we came under constant attack from a very nasty troll who uses AOL as his base. His idea of fun was to challenge the moderators to see how far he could go in vandalizing our forums. When he was banned, he would just register again under another name and continue his activities and then brag about it on other forums.

Unlike every other major ISP we have dealt with under similar circumstances, AOL repeatedly refused to give us appropriate technical assistance to stop him. Our moderators are unpaid volunteers, and we simply do not have time to deal with irresponsible ISP's such as AOL.

The sad result is that, if you wish to post on AnandTech, it will have to be with another email provider AND from another, hopefully more responsible ISP. You can do this and still keep your AOL membership. AOL has a program that allows you to do so for around $10 - $12 per month, AS LONG AS you use another dial-up provider for your ISP.

Sorry for the inconvenience,

I just found some messages in this forum about my issue. That's a bit disconcerting.

Can I have a list of dial-up ISPs that are BANNED so I can try to subscribe to one that will not restrict my access?

*cough* proxy server *cough*

I believe there is a list of banned ISP/Mail addresses under the Help section. I think AOL is the only ISP that is banned.

I can't find the list, and I don't know of any proxy server addys to use.

Before I sign up for MSN, is MSN a banned ISP?

Click on the "FAQ" button at the top and you'll find a short list of the banned ISP's. It also states that not only are the AOL email addresses banned but also the entire IP address range used by AOL is banned.

Can anyone recommend a service that is better than MSN that offers 1 or 2 free months too?

Why not try Juno or NetZero? They are free but do limit you to like 10hrs/month. If that is suffecient for your surfing then it would solve your problems.

I don't want ads for free surfing, and I can leave my connection on for a long time since I have unlimited local calls.

Check out the ads on the left side of this page. Not necessarily free, but certainly cheap.

Scan for port 1080, that is a common proxy port. Also, 8080. You can also do a search on google for open proxy servers or something.
