Post your vote if you had a hard drive fail

I am conducting a poll on IDE 7200RPM Hard Drives to see what percentage of these drives fail PREMATURLY.

I know that IBM will probably top the list but it may be intersting to see how many of the others fail. Please vote if you have had one of these fail before you think it should have.

Had A Fujitsu 7200rpm drive go down in my mates machine, it sort of works but keeps spinning up, spinning down, clicking etc....gotta get that data off asap.

But, I have an IBM 75GXP 30gb that is approx 2 years old.....never a problem.

Two of the three Western Digitals I've owned failed on me. Ironically, my IBM 60GXP is still going strong after more than a year of use.

my fujitsu drive died twice ^^. It was ALMOST DOA (clicking noises but it still worked). I RMAed it and after about a month of using it, it just died. Should i vote twice then? ^^;;

IBM 60gb 120gxp.Passes the dft but every time I get to about 40 gb eveything gets hosed. This is the 4th time for this drive. I don't know, but once I xfer, process, watch and delete large (400gb+) files it seems to just crap out.The files that it finds can't be read without a little encouragement and then they disappear and thern directories disappear and then the drive disappears from windows and dos.
Oddly, file recovery software can retrieve some of the files, though half of those are corrupt. If I rma I'll get an rma back. Scrooed either way. I guess I'll just have to keep harassing them til they send ma a Maxtor!

Sorry people I was looking at Drives currently available in Australia thats why no IBM 75GXP

So by strong demand I have put it on the vote list. Keep this pole running it will be interesting to see to statistics on how often how often the big brand drives fail prematurely.

I am sure it will of interest to all. Apart from the IBM disasters I have noticed quite a few post like storage review, here and other major sites where a few Maxtors have failed. So I am trying to get a handle on how many of these drives are failing. I know they have a great return policy but really the bottom line is do we want hard drives that fail early in there life? I know I don't.

I am not here to bag any particular drive I am just after some facts and figures and I am sure this poll will assist us all.

Regards to all

what the?...same thing pretty much happened to me...20gb failed, RMAed it, got a 40gb back and it failed after a few weeks of use...RMAed that, now currently using this 40gb for about a month...

Also if you people think I should have none in this poll let me know and I will add it, but I need more than one person to ask for it.

My thoughts are that to get any meaning out of a 'none' vote the poster would have to write a reply and nominate what drives he has used for an extensive period, otherwise the vote will be meaningless however this is an open forum and i am open to suggestions.

My failures are not in your list. Here is my list, and you vote for me:

1) Maxtor 200 meg that was 10 years old
2) Western digital 2 gig that was 3 months old.
3) Quantum 3.2 gig that was 3 years old.

This is out of a total of about 50 drives in 10 years.

I'll give you your second vote for a 'None' or a 'View Results' button. It's pretty pointless to have a poll like this that someone wants to see what the results are and they can't without voting for a drive they didn't have fail.

just my .02

I never had a hdd fail on my yet. The oldest hdd I got right now is a Western digital 6.4gig which is 3-years now. The little thing is still going very strong without any problem's. I use this hdd to store all my mp3's on.

I personally have never had any HDs of mine fail (I stick to Seagate) but at work I've had Maxtor and Samsung drives fail.

I've 2 Maxtors and a WD fail on me over the years... by far the most reliable drives I've owned are IBM, Quantum and Seagate. My IBM 75gxp actually just failed on me after 2 or 3 years of running almost non-stop (I leave my computer on) after a major electrical storm that also took my motherboard out (poo...). My Quantum did survive the storm however. Unfortunately Quantum no longer exists and I still don't trust Seagate due to some bad comments from people I trust, so I just bought a 80gb 120gxp. See ya in a decade... 🙂

My experience in the from the past three years on my own and 'customer' machines; (Assuming my record keeping is accurate😉 )

Western Digital - 5 bad drives, various models including 1 that was sent as an RMA replacement!
IBM 60GXP - 1 bad drive and my partner had 2 bad IBM's 1 60GXP and 1 75 GXP
Fujitsu - 1

Have never had a bad Seagate or Maxtor.

I have 1 Conner 1.0 GB drive running on a Windows NT 3.51 box for 4 years (24/7)
