1600x1200
Full settings, HDR
2x 7800gts w/ 84.25 drivers

~30 fps inside, ~20-30 outside. Strangely going down to 1280x960 didn't help very much at all (~ +5 fps), so I think I'm cpu limited. I have a venice @ 1.8, but I should be getting an opteron 165 soon that hopefully will oc to 2.6. The poor textures from afar are really annoying, so if I manage to get my fps up I'll definately be editing the .ini file for the better textures.

Doesn't sound right, I get 60+ indoors, highest settings & HDR @ 1280 with a single 7900GT...

when you say highest settings do you mean AA turned up? i get anything from 35-80 indoors with AA maxed and bloom on...is it better to just run HDR rather than bloom and AA?

That depends on the person... Personally, I'd much rather have Bloom + AA. But that is possibly because I do not have an ultra high resolution display. I run at 1280 X 768. Whatever the case, I don't think HDR is that great. At least, I have never seen it look great in any game I have played, except possibly in NFS:MW, where it does look pretty good, but overdone, a bit.

I played a while with HDR on and then with Bloom & AA... the performance was roughly the same but it loses some of its atmosphere to me without the HDR on... everything is just a bit more flat looking... gonna stick with the HDR for this game.

Does anyone know if there is going to be a patch to allow ATI owners to use AA +HDR?

I too prefer HDR to bloom, but jaggies on my sword make me sad.

Specs in sig.

Running card @ XTX speed in games right now, more OCing later.

16x12, 4xAA, 16x AF, Bloom. VSync ON, I hate tearing. 45-75 in dungeons, 25-40 outside. I gotta apply some tweaks, the semi-distant hills and stuff look like @ss. That'll make frames even worse, so I'll have to play with draw distance, etc. Shadows are a huge performance killer too.

I'm running 1280x720 all settings maxed w/HDR+2x AA and 4x AF. Running a R500 with a PPC. Getting framerates of fairly regular 30, occasional dips.

Yes, we all know your stance on this... I for one feel you're losing out... but whatever floats your boat. :p

Damn, all the close up textures look like crap. THey look faded. And I only applied the uGrids tweak.

Honest question- why? From everything I've seen and heard it looks like most of the rest of you are missing out ATM :)

No one is missing out if they are having a blast with the game... If Skywalker likes the Xbox, no reason he is missing out. I am enjoying the PC version of it and running it at practically the same settings as the Xbox. Either way, as long as were having fun with the game instead of trashing it.

I haven't had this much fun in ages and I only have a few hours into it... I am tempted to skip the gym tonight just to get a marathon of hours into it... But, I know that isn't going to be good.

The only advantage I see for the PC version is that it will have some mods for it... But seeing as this is a LONG ways down the road and the game is likely to drop in price by then, probably means buying one over the other isn't that big of a deal at this point.

Well, as for the XBOX, there's better games on the PC I feel... and in the past you seemed to completely blast PC gaming, opting to be console exclusive. It's not just about graphics, although PC does have that going for it, but it's gameplay as well.

Now as for Oblivion, obviously its the same game for both, so gameplay is a non-issue.. but it would look better on the PC, as high resolutions + HDR > 720p+HDR+2xAA all else being equal.

I don't know what impressions you have gotten from me, but I likely was gaming on PCs prior to you by quite a bit. When I started, they way you gamed was by buying books that had the code which you then programmed yourself(this was prior to IBM creating the current PC platform- no hard drives either). I own hundreds of PC games and still pick up newer titles that will play better on it(HL2, DooM3, FarCry) or are exclusive(RoN, Freelancer). I have Morrowind for both the XBox and the PC and I'm sure if you dig through the archives you will find posts from me discussing the huge advantages ES:III had on the PC over the console. As a general rule, I play GAMES, not systems. I own every current system and will continue to do so as I refuse to miss a game because of a platform bias. That said, I will pick each game up based on what platform will give me the best end experience.

Now as for Oblivion, obviously its the same game for both, so gameplay is a non-issue.. but it would look better on the PC, as high resolutions + HDR > 720p+HDR+2xAA all else being equal.

From what I've seen this certainly isn't close to the case in this instance. Unlike most others here I actually have a monitor that supports high resolution(none of this 1920x1200 mid res or low res 1600x1200 crap either :p)- I run a FP2141(2048x1536@85Hz) and am far more of a vocal advocate of resolution then almost anyone else on these forums(there are a few others that are comparable). That said, it appears as if Oblivion has had a rather severe downgrade in terms of the basic visuals when compared to the 360 version of the game. The shaders and textures(which is really odd) seem to have been downgraded considerably versus the 360. They also disabled AA when utilizing HDR for the PC which is another mark against it. I'm certain that I will buy Oblivion for the PC at a point when it has some decent mods available for it- but right now I want the best gaming experience I can have with it. So do I go with my 22" monitor, Senn 580s and downgraded underlying visuals- or do I go with my 30" HDTV and Panny DD sound system with the highest available visuals?

Edit

So the XBOX version only runs at 30 fps? That's terrible.

For a slow paced RPG....? If you say so.

Fair enough, I'm sorry I said that. I was only basing it off several posts you made a couple months back before the 360 came out.

The game certainly seems to have been downgraded, and has performance issues in places where it's hard to see how they could exist in the first place. Personally, I'm thinking some of this may be bugs... a disappointing trend these days in regards to games being released too quickly. I'm betting a patch will fix most of this, as some of it seems indeed broken and not just downgraded. As for HDR+AA, it should technically be able to be done by some cards, and the fact that Oblivion doesn't let you do so on ANY card leads me also to believe there's a bug somewhere. It may be patched in at a later time.

About the screens you're comparing though, I too am an advocate of resolution, and pixel density matters to me as well. :) I have no problems sitting in my chair, watching a screen that you can't as openly see the individual pixels like on large sized yet low-res screens. (Most HDTVs I'd still consider low-res by comparison of what I'm used to). ;)

You sure it only runs at 30 fps? RPG or not, though, I can't deal with 30 fps... Then again, if the Xbox is capable of always sustaining 30 at every point in the game, then I guess it isn't too bad. But still, that isn't a great frame rate by any definition.
