I just started messing around with night shots. The camera i have is only capable of 15 second exposures but i was able to get some decent first try shots. Ill post them soon once i touch them up.

Not the best shot ever but here is my attempt - ISO of 400 (no idea if thats a good amount) Focal length of F4.0 (again, not sure whats a good FL) exposure 15"

This is my backyard taken at midnight, with the moon in the sky

@kowalabearhugs - im not sure what the difference is, after reading a bit on it, i think jpeg.

@anubis - roughly how long do you expose those shots?

top one is 30 seconds
the moon one was handheld at 1/200 with a 300 mm lens, the sun had set but was still illuminating the moon as it rose

the last 3 are 15-30 seconds i cant tell you 100% they weren't shot with a digital camera and IDK where the notebook with that info is offhand

More practice, this is the front of my parents house in total darkness (11pm), but there was a spotlight on the house.
Canon powershot sx20is ISO400, F:4.0, 8" exposure

If the house is blown out the leaves and grass look great, but if the house looks good the leaves are black as night. Maybe ill take both and feather the two together in PS?

You can't really shot in total darkness, you need at least some kind of light from flashgun, flashlight to neonlights.

All my shots are handheld:
