EDITED. Sorry. :(
tsk tsk tsk

do you like Ubuntu?

It's not bad. ;)

Very user friendly, in my opinion. Though...I can't bring myself to abandon WinXP.

I'm not fond of the fonts, either. I've downloaded the MS fonts and firefox still displays oddly.

Just make sure that X is set with Composite Enabled and then run xcompmgr -cFf&

That will spawn xcompmgr in the background with menu fade in/out and drop shadows. Then you can use transset .5 and then click on the window you want to make it 50% transparent. You can change .5 to whatever value you want though.

EDIT: Oh and if you dont' put the xcompmgr into your startup with highest priority then you need to kill gnome-panel as well, or else the windows will go over the menu bars.

so in reality you would do xcompmgr-cFf&
followed by a killall gnome-panel

gnome-panel will automaticall respawn, so after that you will be set.

I would go with a straight up Debian install if you want that. You can use any window manager with other distros, but most will still install Gnome/KDE in the base install. Debian will not. I've used Debian on one of my laptops for awhile with Fluxbox and now Gnome/KDE at all.

I will give it a try TY. I am still thinking about taking the Mac plunge though becuase OSX looks so nice (Windowmaker like). Apple should make OSX available for all comps I think they could take on MS better than Linux(just my opinion).

That and OS X icons from gnome-look.org are my favorites, but I am still waiting on the guy who made the glass icons on Gnome-look.org to finish up his work so I can use them :D
