i haven't gotten to flying thing on gta yet...
but why is it difficult to fly?
does it take special skills?
i'd imagine it's an open air... so ...nothing much to crash into...
unless you are doing what mookow's doing around them tall buildings.

I can hardly fly the damn thing at all in the PS2 version. I think my longest flight is 3 seconds...

The reason why its so hard to fly is that its got such short wings. Shorter wings like that produce very little lift. You cant point your nose more than 2-3 degrees above vertical for a sustained period of time. So, yeah, its pretty hard to fly.

I think that they didnt want ppl to fixate on flying. Its funny, but the challenge of it makes me fly more. Of course, I'm still working on my ultimate challenge: shooting down another Dodo while in midair while I am also in flight. Since it takes ~40 Uzi rounds at close range to set a Dodo on fire, this may take me a while, especially considering I can only fire sideways.

Sorry, missed your post. Anyway, there are a few steps you need to follow:
1.) Obviously, jack a Dodo.
2.) line yourself up so that you are at the end of the runway (the one the jets use) and pointed precisely down the center of the runway, aimed at the city.
3.) Start your takeoff roll. You will be keeping the accelerator down the ENTIRE TIME while flying. Dont forget that. Hold the "down turret" button. It takes a little experience to judge when you should let off on "down turret". However, if you hold on too long, you'll hit the tarmac with the prop, and come to a stop.
4.) When you let off the down button, the plane will spring into the air. Tap down turret again. Level it off quickly. I'd say no more than 15-20 feet off the ground. From then on, you're flying. Just keep the nose level. You'll catch some thermals, most up, some down. Just keep your nose level, dont panic in the downdrafts, and make GENTLE turns. The flight controls are way too sensitive.
5.) Enjoy.

They are in the airport. Just cruise around and look for a plane like the one in my screenshots. There are 3 of them, so you should be able to spot one quickly

I believe that the Dodo had its wings clipped post Sept 11. What I heard was that in the original game purchased prior to Sept 11, there is a scene where you crash the plane into a building. Due to obvious reasons, they took out that part of the game and "clipped" the wings to make it very hard to do.

i don't buy that at all.
they could've kept the wing span as is... and made the flying just as difficult.
it's not like the game engine calculates the manuverability of the plane by its wingspan.

even with shorter wings.. you can still crash into buildings... no?

i suppose you are referring to ps2 version of the game... when you talk about pre-post- 911.

now... that i can buy.

i would think that the game engine has a certain size limitations on moving objects.
texture standization and other factors, i'm sure were involved as well.

Remember the caller on chatter box:
"Liberty city ___ rule!" right before "that last caller is so full of crap, everyone knows women are mad of sand"

It's not working! Help! I accelerate, dodo down and then release like Mookow said; I get into the air, but I can only fly for about 2-3 seconds before I fall back to the earth. Is there anything I should be pressing/not pressing? I've spent like an hour and I really want to do it. Any help?

UPDATE: If I just accelerate without Dodo Up/Down, I fly for about 20 seconds before I smash into the highway at Stauton Island....So....There's something missing.

If you can tell me how to save a replay, I'd be happy to email it to you. I think what you arent doing is leveling off quickly enough. Level off 5 feet off the deck and see if that helps.

Hmm. Will do. I think if you press F1 ingame, it will record 20 secs of the game...f2 will record the last 20 secs that you just did...f3 is for loading. (just read that from the GTA3 thread here ;)
