i used to be into Godsmack a bit back in high school, then realized all their songs are identical and tony rombola (the guitarist) has a single formula he uses for every song...

i'm into technical music so the instruments and viruosity are the first things i notice in music. therefore i listen to death metal, progressive metal, jazz, and classical. some pop and electronic-oriented stuff too

progressive is stuff like Dream Theater, Nevermore, Pink Floyd, Death, King's X, Opeth, or Porcupine Tree. but the term is too broad, just like any sub-genres of rock. Death is an excellent progressive death metal band, and so is Opeth. if you want virtuosity, Dream Theater's got it.
