It's a "pager." Each one of those 7(?) big boxes is a different desktop. The smaller boxes inside those bigger boxes is an application running on that desktop. The pager lets me move between them with a click.

n0c, I don't know if it is just the terminology used where I work, but we call them "planes" at JLAB. Does the rest of the unix world call them pagers?

I've always heard them called pagers. That one happens to be bbpager (blackbox pager), so maybe that's why I picked up the term.
