I don't have any of my own on hand, but I did some minor geneaology research and came across this photograph of Flyermax2k3's great grandpa from 1891.

Those are precious photos there!

A few years before my grandma died, I had her sit at the kitchen table with a shoe box full of old pictures. She took them out and explained who was in the pictures and what the circumstances were when the image was shot. I was looking over her shoulder with my video camera running. I've got to do that with my parents and aunt & uncle soon. Many of these pictures have nothing written on the back to explain anything!

Here's a couple of my other grandmother...

Me, my grandfather, & brother 45 years ago...

I never had the chance to do that with my grandmother (died a month ago) or my grandpa (died about forty years ago). :(

I have to spend some time with my granddad soon and do this.

I have so many more to scan, right now my parents have them (obtained from my grandparents after their death). I plan to bring my scanner with me on my next visit.

Grandparents on my father's side
Both deceased :(
Frank
Ruth

Grandparents on my mother's side
Deceased :(
Zephery (yes, that's his real name)
Still with us :)
Wilhemina

I didn't colorize that last one either, that's the way it was taken.
I had to remove a big tear mark on the grandpa one above (Zephery)

Good pics.
I didn't remove any "damage" from mine after scanning, but did let photoshop "auto adjust" the black levels / contrast etc, to compensate for years of fading and yellowing.

I scanned these in about 5 years ago. My image editing skills weren't all that great back then so you can really see the where I "tried" to fix the tear.

Those pics are all 8x10's that my mother has hanging on the walls. The frames kept them in pretty good condition.

Everyone please scan your old family pictures (starting with the oldest first) to preserve a digital copy of something that will otherwise deteriorate. Then burn it to multiple cd's/dvd's and store it somewhere safe and distribute to your family (just a friendly neighborhood PSA).

I love old B&W family photos. I have a few of my parents when they were kids in the late 20's early 30's and of my mom and dad when they dated in WWII.

Era pictures facisnate me. from their clothes, expressions, background. what they were thiking. i try to picture them in color to make them more real and substantial... i know im weird.
