Golden Sun 1 & 2 for GBA is awesome. Also the entire Zelda series for GB/GBC/GBA. Oracle of Seasons and Ages for GBC were especially good, as the 2 games are linked. FF7/8/9 for PS. Didn't really get into FFX for PS2.

GB: Zelda Link's Awakening/DX
GBC: Zelda Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages
GBA: Zelda A Link to the Past, The Minish Cap, Golden Sun 1 and 2
PS: FF7, 8, 9

Must've been II; III sucked ass, period. PS4 continued the storyline from 2; 3 was just a bad memory.

NES - Legend of Zelda (not traditional rpg but who cares)
SNES - Chrono Trigger (Earthbound comes REAL close..so different!)
Sega Genesis - Phantasy Star 4
PS1 - Valkyrie Profile
PS2 - Kingdom Hearts (some would say this is more action/adventure..whatever)

I'll add a few more consoles if you don't mind:

Turboduo - Y's Book 1 and 2
Saturn - Panzer Dragoon Saga (traditional rpgs were sort of scarce on the US saturn)
Master System - Phantasy Star
Sega CD - Lunar: Eternal Blue
PC - Planescape Torment

What was the story of each... briefly? I think I have their stories mixed up in my head.

PS1, for Sega Master System :

Alis is a young girl whose brother Nero was brutally killed by a mysterious man known as Lassic. Nero's last words were: "Sister, find a warrior named Odin, he can help you to defeat Lassic!" Now Alis' dangerous adventure begins. Her first task is to find Odin. Then, with help and support from her friends, Alis will have to stop the evil Lassic and to save the world...

PS2, for Genesis (2,3,4 are all for Genesis):

The people on a technically advanced planet Mota make experiments to create biomechanical creatures. But one day, a creature was created that appeared to be dangerous to the humans themselves. No signal came to the capital city from the experimental labs... You, a nameless young man living in Paleo, Mota's capital, are commanded to go to the labs and check the issue. Your friend Nei, a semi-human girl, goes with you, and other brave adventurers join you on what starts with a simple mission but develops into saving the entire world...

PS3 (the sucker of the series):

A long time ago, a great war between Orakio and Laya devastated the planet. 1000 years later, a young Orakian prince named Rhys decides to marry the beautiful Maya, his heart's chosen one. But during the marriage ceremony, a strange creature appears and kidnaps the bride. Were those the legendary Layans who kidnapped the princess? Whatever the answer might be, Rhys has to find it out on his own. He must find his beloved one...

PS4 (my personal favorite):

The Algo star system is in troubled times...

Many thousands of years ago, the Algo Star System was a peaceful system. Three planets surrounded the peaceful Algo star and were in perfect harmony: Palma, a lush green planet, where its citizens devoted their lives to arts and the sciences...Motavia, a desert planet, inhabited by humans and native Motavians, and the enigmatic Dezolis, a harsh ice planet, where the citizens were just as unknown as the planet itself. Unfortunately, the harmony and balance was not to last...Palma had exploded, and with it, 90% of the population of Algo died. Motavia had fallen into horrible conditions from the explosion, turning almost into a total wasteland.

The Darkness spread its hand over the land...

Now, 1,000 years had passed. Motavia had healed somewhat, and life was beginning to return to the way it once was thousands of years ago. The Hunter's Guild on Motavia helped to keep things steady.

But now, a dark evil once thought to be long dead is beginning to stir once again, and the young Hunter, Chaz, is about to begin his ultimate adventure...and all of it started with one simple routine assignment...

er... I guess it wasn't that brief.

one sleeper action/RPG game on SNES was Soul Blazer. That game rocked.

I wasn't big on RPG's after the SNES days honestly. I was more into the Action/RPG than actual RPG though. Last "real" RPG I played was one of the FF's on NES. I liked them back then w/out any of the flashy stuff. Don't know why I didn't get into em on SNES really. Zelda on SNES was my fav.
