I just got a Canon A40 a few days ago, and haven't had a chance to play with it yet, but snapped a sunset photo of the 'backyard' at sunset, just to show it off...:D (the backyard I mean...)

Edit: All photos taken with Canon PowerShot (consumer and professional) cameras.

I learned a long time ago that good pictures are usually the result of three things. One, a interesting subject (person, place, thing). Second, the ability for the photographer to see that it is interesting. Third, for the photographer to photograph the subject in an interesting way (by that being vantage point, view, use of light and darkness, etc...

The best example being photo classes I took as a kid in high school. Everyone had a brownie black and white camera. Nothing amazing or special about them, they are just rugged is all. No special lenses or anything, just a bare bones camera. Well the teacher sent out 30 students to go take pictures of things, and for everyone to come back, process them, and display them to the class. :) Well it turned out that say half the class has pictures and are somewhat interesting, but nothing you would pause at, but the other percentage were amazing. One person only had photos of people, but they seemed to say things in the way they were photo'd. Heck, we would double take the people photo'd because in the picture we would see some thing we never noticed before. A attitude or emotion that we didn't notice. Another student would take pictures of everyday stuff and would just do it from an interesting vantage point so that they seemed kinda cool. Another student would use light and darkness to show a kind of hidden world in places all around. Etc...

So next time you take some pictures of family, say take one from low on the ground, or high in the air. Maybe catch them from the side when they are not paying attention to you, but other people or things. Look for unusual plays of light and dark, etc... You might be surprised what you come up with when you keep an eye out for situations or views instead of subjects alone.:D;)
