I had some major video driver issues over the last month. No amount of Driver Cleaner, uninstalls, reinstalls, removing devices or adding devices were able to fix me up. I'm not quite ready for a fresh install of XP so I figured I'd try a system restore as a last resort.
I ended up using a Restore Point from 2 months ago (I tried a couple sooner than that but the problem was still present). It fixed my video driver issues and so I am pretty happy with the result.
BUT... there have been some little problems since the restore and I'm wondering if anyone has advice about what to do about them (or advice in general about what issues may come up).
1) Some Critical Updates aren't installing: As soon as the restore was finished Windows Update tried (and failed) to install a couple critical updates. Very odd error messages I've never seen before in XP... basicaly runtime errors
2) Applications (uninstall/reinstall): Some apps are showing up in the Program list but I can't uninstall them. It looks like I'll have to reinstall some stuff as well but that's no big deal.
3) Tons of folders named *(2) (some files as well): I'm assuming that every time Restore restored a folder or file it backed the current one up as *(2) and I can sift through them and delete what I don't need.
Any thoughts about #1 and #2? I'm glad I got rid of my video issues but I think there be enough oustanding issues because of the Restore that I may end up doing a fresh XP installation fairly soon.
