had a toothache last week and got a root canal (my first) done this past fri. I still have the followup appt this coming fri for either a filling or a crown. Dentist said it might be sensitive and prescribed vicodin (and penicillin) just in case. My tooth was fine all yesterday but today it suddenly started hurting again. Not a sharp pain, but something like a sore pain. It has slowly gotten worse and now is at a point where I cant even bite without wincing. Vicodin didn't do much.

Is this normal? I'd call the dentist, but unfortunately her office is closed now.

Dry socket. Youch. If it is really bothering you I suggest going back. Either you need stronger painkillers or your antibiotics aren't working. Either way you should contact your dentist immediately. Pain is a signal something is wrong.

Never heard of anything but a partial or full crown after a root canal. How could a filling cover that much of the tooth's natural crown without breaking?

Anyhow, where is the pain? The nerves of the roots of the tooth should be gone now. Sounds like he didn't get them all.

dry socket is from wisdom teeth removal, not a root canal.

try some NSAIDs to reduce inflammation.

wha?

something like advil or aleve

ah. is advil stronger than vicodin? there is no swelling btw

you might have some inflammation that you just can't see. advil isn't stronger than vicodin it just works in a different way.

I had a root canal on a molar and there was enough tooth leftover that the dentist decided just use a filling. That was eight years ago and it seems to be fine.

Hopefully its not an infection, but is always a risk. To get pain on the third day doesn't necessarily mean that is the case tho, it might have taken that long for alcohol to dissipate from within the canal. I'm no expert tho, obviously its something that needs to be monitored, and fortunately you already have an appt. this week.

Cool. I've usually had root canals after a significant amount of decay has led to an infection. So there's already the decay, and then the grinding to open up the roots. I guess it depends on how much of the tooth is still good before the root canal, and how many roots the tooth has as well.

Ah, my mistake, I thought he had a rebuilt tooth like I did, where I had to have a complete reconstruction. But you are incorrect when you said dry socket is just from wisdom teeth reomoval, it can happen at any tooth.

Dry socket can be from ANY tooth removal, but you are correct in that it doesn't happen in root canals as they are packed (and there is really no blood clot to dislodge causing the dry socket).

Take four ibuprofen (motrin, nuprin, etc.) - that's 800mg prescription dose. Just don't exceed 3.2 grams in a 24 hour period. If that does not kill the pain you may want to call your dentist back.

Theres a possibility that he did not remove all the nerves of that tooth. Check with your doc about that. When i had mine done, there really wasn't any pain at all afterwards. I don't even remember taking painkillers. Maybe everyone reacts differently.
