This. Maybe I'd get less shit in the mail if stamps cost more.

Unfortunately, we the people...who actually buy stamps for our mail...subsidize the costs for the direct mail advertisers who get a significant break on their junk mail that they send to us...

Why not, you know, just increase the cost of that bulk mail BS...just enough so that there is less load on them but the same profit?

Less Junk mail = Less shit I receive in my mailbox that ends up in the trash, Lower load on Mailman & the entire chain. Everybody wins!

Hardly. That junk mail is easy to sort for the postal service and if anything, brings in a boatload of money to fund USPS operations.

Sounds right to me. I've been asking for a spam filter for my mailbox for years now.

mailing a package priority mail is already absurd--- 12.35 for medium box and 16.85 for large box.

In other news, the Pony Express will now charge $1750.00 for a first class delivery from Chicago to St. Louis.

You have it backwards. Bulk mail makes it so we can mail a random single letter from one side of the nation to the other for less than $0.50.

But why $.49? Just make it a even $.50.

Profit? the USPS doesn't make any profit. And if you are only going for breakeven, then how does that help the USPS' current financial crisis? Can't cut employees, days or sites without Congressional approval and that's hard to do, as we all saw with the Saturday delivery issue this summer.

Yeah, I only buy stamps once a year for Christmas cards. Every year they seem to cost a few cents more so I can't use last year's stamps without extra postage.

Just hike the price up to a dollar and leave it there for a few years, will ya?

You don't buy "forever" stamps? They are good no matter how much postage goes up and don't cost any more than a normal stamps...

They cost the same as a first class stamp, when you make the purchase. They're good forever, even if the price of the first class stamps goes up.

Which makes me wonder if that's why they want to raise the price of first class stamps - to generate sales from people who want to avoid the rate increase.

Yep. We don't use a lot of stamps...but do use a couple each month for bills that don't have on-line payment options.
I made the mistake of telling my wife to buy stamps at Costco...thinking it would just be the normal amount of stamps...

Nope...it was a Costco sized package...we probably won't have to buy stamps for at least 10 years.

Aren't they all "Forever Stamps" now? I don't think you can by a labeled $.46 stamp. Maybe I'm wrong but I thought I saw a headline about that a year ago or so.

Still surviving off a sheet of 10 I bought about a year ago.

Blame congress, they won't let USPS drop Saturday mail delivery even though it would save billions.

There are a lot of things the USPS should be cutting before Saturday delivery. Congress got this one right - amazing as that is.
