My GF's PC died a few months back. At first I thought her CPU had burned out, but it turned out to be her mobo. So, I cannibalized a mobo from another system, and all has been well until now.

Lately, the system occasionally freezes during POST. We often get nothing more than the Award (I think) BIOS line at the top, and "Press DEL to enter Setup" at the bottom. Sometimes it will detect and list the CPU underneath the BIOS header, but that's it.

If it gets as far as detecting RAM (immediately after CPU detection), then it seems to boot up fine.

I ran MemTest86 off a bootable CD (during a successful reset), and the RAM (which is less than a year old) checks out fine.

I figure the CPU is finally dying like the old mobo did, but I figured I'd get second opinions.

CPU is Athlon XP 2800+
Mobo is Abit AN7
RAM is 2x1GB Corsair DDR 400

If anything like my system, the delay at the logo screen, means that it is attempting to detect some device, with random success. The randomness of it suggests that a connection somewhere is not solid. Check all cables and connections, and reseat everything.
