I'm going to start on Paxil next week for a combination of depression, anxiety (in some social situations), and a lil bit of obsessivenes

If you have taken it what has this drug done for you?

I took it about 7 years ago. I don't think I really needed it, just wanted a 'happy pill'. I found that I lost all sense of responsibility - goofed off at work, blew off stuff when I was on a business trip, etc. I stopped taking it. The proper thing would have been to go back to the doc and get the dosage adjusted or a change of drug but I didn't.

Be prepared for headaches for a week or so.

I think Paxil is the only one that is officially approved for social anxiety, or at least it used to be the only one.

I've never taken it, but I know lots of people who do. My friend tells me it's for anxiety. Personally, when I feel anxious I exercise. I'm not much of a believer in pills to help me deal with everyday stuff, but your Doctor should know what's best. Good Luck, I hope it helps.

I took Paxil for about a year, but had to stop because of stomach pains. It did help me cope with my depressive tendencies, but I haven't gone off the deep end without it. I can't comment on its effectiveness for social anxiety, since I do not have that problem (if anything, I am overly social; I go up and blab to total strangers.)

I haven't taken it, but I've heard many good things about it...

Of course, a number of those were at a short film shown to physicians and their families as something shown before the real movie (Drug companies will pay for various things in an effort to get doctors to prescribe the drug). The movie featured a computer animated guy named "Paxi" who saved various people from their illness. It was really strange, had strangely high production values, and was the most Joe Camel-esque advertisement I've ever seen, since, well, Joe Camel. I wish I could find the movie on Kazaa...

i use to take it...it works great! you will really notice a difference...only problem is the sexual side effects....you can go for hours if ya know what i mean......so i switched to zoloft and all is good now, but i have noticed that zoloft does not help as much as paxil, but it still worx great....i take it for mood swings and anxiety

I went into the doctor for symptoms of insomnia, and I ended up walking out of the doctors office with a 15 day perscription for Paxil. I had no idea what it was. I'm not depressed though, I'm just having trouble sleeping. Anyay, the Paxil seemed to bring about a slight change in my perceptions and overall well being. I can't really explain it.

WTF? That's just not right.

Paxil takes up to 4-6 weeks before it even starts having the proper affect. Then, you can't just quit it. You need to slowly come off of it over a period of a few weeks. It makes some people a bit sleepy at times but that's the mood-leveling affect. Your doctor should have just prescribed some sleeping pills (or, heck, have you tried Benadryl? Knocks my a$$ out! ).

Paxil can increase your appetite and, hence, your weight. It can lower the libido (as was mentioned in an earlier post).

It's not something to take for two weeks and stop. I'd be looking for a different doctor.

10mg is barely anything for Paxil. 20mg is a typical dosage for someone who's suffering anxiety and is looking for a long-term solution. My daughter is on 30mg, a buy that works for me is on 20mg. Another guy at work is on 40mg of Paxil plus he takes Zoloft.

2 weeks at 10mg probably won't have much of an effect on you.

Naw, you'll be fine for finals.
10 mgs probably won't do much for you. I went up to 30mgs/day before I started to feel any better from it. The sexual side effects were a bitch. Some doctors will put you on welbutrin to counter the effects because it makes you horny as a mofo.

I took about it for about 3 days. I hated it. My stomach felt weird and it actually made me feel worse because food is a big source of my joy of life. This was about 3 years ago. Was overstressed with school, finances, family problems, etc.

The best way to deal with depression is to set one's mind straight and have a strong will to deal with the issues. It took me some time but I eventually did without taking that disgusting pill.

I didn't like the idea of depending on chemicals to control my mood either.

I have a coworker who has been on Paxil for around a year now and it made all the difference for him. He always seemed to be pissed off and since getting on the drug he is much more optomistic and happy. I cannot image him going back to what he was like. I am not a doctor however and if you really want more information I would search the web for discussion groups based on the drug.

It was a walk-in clinic, not my regular doctor; thus they couldn't give me a perscription for sleeping pills. I would need to see my regular doctor for that. The doctor figured my sleeplessness was caused by anxiety, thus she wrote a small perscription for Paxil. Normal medications like Benadryl, Unisom, etc. don't have any effect on me.

Ok, would be docs.

SSRI's take 2 weeks or so to kick in. MAXIMAL effect is seen a little later, but 2 weeks is enough to see something.

I was on Prozac for over 3 years for depression, but it didn't seem to help with my anxiety. The doctor switched me to Paxil and it helped. However, I got pretty aggressive and I kept getting hot flashes. I'd just be sitting and all of a sudden sweat would be pouring from my forehead. Sexual side effects too. The doctor switched me to Celexa and that seems to be the best of the three.

This is how I feel too. I have a vague uneasy feeling about people en masse depending on psychoactive chemicals just to be able to function through their daily lives. The mindset of "I'm depressed, I need to take Prozac/Zoloft/Paxil/whatever" seems to be becoming all too common.
