How are you plugging in the power connectors? Based on what I can see on that card, you should be able to get away with plugging in two 6's versus a 6 and an 8. See if that makes any difference.

That's how the 680 was .just 2 6 pin. But on this one 970 if I plug just 2 6. Screen comes on saying
Please power down and connect power supply to video card.
The pci cables come directly from psu internal. They are not clipped in on it. I can't replace them

Could be a bad card. Possibly a BIOS reset with the new card installed and connected as required will help.

2x8pin= 2x(6+2)pin. Your connectors should be OK. Depends on your PSU - needs to be good quality 500+W.

I guess it. Is gamer pc . that some one else put together. Maybe he was going run sli. But I'm giving up . shipping it back today. I found a evga gtx970 has exact same. 2 6 pci connectors as my 680 did. So I just order that now. This 970 g1 Is from gigabyte.

Which MB is this ? The older sandy bridge MB (which has pcie 2.0 slots) require firmware update to use a pcie 3.0 card.

I had an old msi MB and had to find a beta bios to get a new (r9 390) video card work - was a real hassle.

I doubt it has pcie-3 support. THe last bios was 2009; pcie-3 spec was 2010 and actual MB had them afterwards. The bios that 'fixed' my motherboard was released in 2013.

Here are the specs:
‰ Triple PCI Express x16 Support
¾ 2 x16 PCI Express 2.0
¾ 1 x16 PCI Express 1.0
¾ Supports 4 GB/sec (8 GB/sec concurrent) bandwidth

I would contact evga support at this point and ask them for advice.

Quite frankly the dual core is a bit dated at this point and I'm not sure they can fully utilize a 970 (slow cpu).

Ya I just talk to evga tech. My mb will only support up to 700 series gpu. I'll need a mb w uefi bios. Like lga775 for 60 bux
