I am thinking of buying a new sound card
I am running mostly win2k on an overclocked thunderbird on the asus a7v133 motherboard
Currently i am using the onboard sound which i dont mind for games and such (im sure it could be better but its ok)
What i do mind is playing dvds. I have to turn the volume up significantly louder and i get this hissing sound in the background when i do that. The speakers i have are the cambridge sound works fps2000.
Is this hissing and poor dvd sound do to my sound card and if so what is the best replacement for my system.

thanks

My Sound Blaster Live! was dying on me so last evening I went to Best Buy and purchased the Hercules Muse 5.1 DVD sound card for $29.99. I'm running a set of Altec Lansing ATP-3 speakers with this sound card and it's really quite good. My MP3s sound good, my DVDs sound good (I'm watching a Sting DVD at the moment) and also Grand Theft Auto III sounds pretty good with this sound card. Hercules also gives you the latest version of PowerDVD which I have also installed.

The Philips Rythmic edge is about $29 from Newegg(4 speaker output) or if you need 5.1 sound the Philips SE or AE are good choices as well, other options would be Santa Cruz & Audigy (OEM versions are cheaper).

What`s your volume setting like for CD/DVD audio? Look in Control panel then Audio and Sound devices icon, then in voice tab then volume .Onboard sound quality does vary between boards so yes it`s possible it could be causing it. You can also check in Control Panel,System icon then hardware and go to Device Manager, select DVD drive, right click with mouse and select properties then volume tab and check the setting level.

The Philips ThunderBird Avenger based cards are very good..... I've got three Philips cards, all working flawlessly. I also put these card in the systems I build.

Cheers

You could try muting the Microphone in the mixer. I somehow vaguley remember having a hissing problem and that eliminating it.

I got a Philips Seismic Edge on eBay for about $25 shipped. It's a very nice card; about the only feature it lacks is a software controlled equalizer - my Vortex2 soundcard had one, and it just hasn't been the same without it. I just ordered a new Turtle Beach Santa Cruz card off of Buy.com for ~$56 shipped. I'll bookmark this thread and let you all know how it turns out. :D
