My wife might be getting a good job offer there in Columbia. Anyone have any opinions? Good state? Good internet? Too full of rednecks ( no offense:) )? Busy roads? Thanks in advance for any input :).

Columbia rocks. A traffic jam during rush hour is 6 cars at a stop light. I loved the trips I made down there. I'd definitely go back. :D

One positive. So far so good. :p

But the real question is... Would you live there?

we moved to columbia from northern virginia in '91. last place in the world I ever imagined I'd live, one of the last places I'd have considered moving, on purpose.. but that was the hand life dealt us, and.. really has been the best thing ever happened. so much cheaper here, so much safer.. way better place to raise a family.

what you want to know?

oh. traffic.. sure.. there's some traffic. nothin' to get too worked up about, though.
rednecks.. sure.. there's some.. there's some everywhere. more good ol' boys than rednecks, though.
good internet.. well.. I don't honestly know.. I never had internet anywhere else!

it's a pretty nice place. small yet urban. 2 hours from charleston, 2 hours from the beach, 2 hours from the mountains, 2 hours from charlotte, 4 hours from atlanta.. so you can get to bigger places without too much effort if you want. state capitol, large university, so.. we're not all rednecks! one of the nicest zoo's in the country..

where are you coming from?

I would. As a warning, it is a college town. So if you aren't into college kids being around, it may not be the place for you ;)

Really just the questions I asked above.. or more if you can think of other good things to say.. Who is your internet provider and is it fast access? <--- one of my top priorities.. :)

Btw, I'll be moving there from Florida if it goes through.

ok.. internet.. I have earthlink cable through time warner (roadrunner). there's dsl around too, through earthlink too, maybe.. and bell south.. not right here in my neighborhood, I don't think (although the people on the telephone keep inferring that there is, so.. maybe.. last summer there wasn't, but I guess there could be now.. I'm happy with cable, so.. I haven't really tried to find out!), but closer in and in the newer neighborhoods.

is it fast.. ::goes to find one of those check your speed thingies::
Your raw speed was 2612630.47 bits per second which is the same as:

Communications

2.6 megabits per second
How communication devices are rated. Kilo means 1,000 and mega means 1,000,000. Examples include 56k modem and 10Mbit Ethernet

Storage

318.9 kilobytes per second
The way data is measured on your hard drive and how file sharing and FTP programs measure transfer speeds. Kilo is 1,024 and mega is 1,048,576.

1MB file download

3.2 seconds
The time it would take you to download a 1 megabyte file at this speed.

Rating

Compared to all connection types worldwide, yours is fantastic

was that relevant? c-net says 1752 Kbps .. is that fast? I have no idea.

it's not quite so hot here as it is in florida!

I moved to Columbia, SC from east Tennessee. It is mad hot in Columbia. No mountains. Poeple down here like to rubber-neck, so traffic is an issue near Columbia.

The people are pretty nice, basically Columbia is a college town and a state government town.

There a good places to eat in Columbia, after 4+ years here I still can't find a good Chinese resturant. Most are buffets.

Internet is pretty good with Time Warner Roadrunner and Bellsouth DSL available. No good computer shops though. When u find one they are too high priced. Like a Asus A7N8X Deluxe for $190.00 plus tax.

Any good malls / AMC Theatres? We're pretty big movie buffs and my wife is a hearty shopper :). Thanks for all the great input so far, especially the detailed Internet Access.. looks good.

I was born and raised just outside of Columbia (Lexington). It's not a bad place if you don't mind being HOT! It's one of the hottest places on the east coast (temperature wise). There is rarely any breeze and the humidity is horrible. I've seen it get 110 in the shade with 100 % humidity. It gets pretty miserable in the summer.

Locationwise Columbia is great. You're pretty much half way to everywhere.

The schools in that area are really good. My sister still lives there and her kids are being taught Japanese in Kindergarten. So it's a great place to raise a family.

I lived in Columbia for a few years.

These are my opinions:

The Harbison side of town is the best place to live. There is a very nice mall (the nicest in town) and a Carmike 14 theater complex out there with all the standard chain restaurants.

Yes, it's hotter in Columbia than other areas in SC, but not that bad.

Lake Murray is a great lake, and just outside that side (Harbison) of town. Nearby is Harbison state Forest, a small preserve with good trails to ride, walk, or run.

On the other side of town, you have Fort Jackson. It's a basic training camp for non-infantry Army types.

Downtown is nice, and so is the riverwalk. West Columbia is redneckville. Out east of the river, north of downtown, is a slum continuing out on Two Notch Road (land of the street walkers and pawn shops).

If you continue out on Two Notch Road past the highway it starts getting nicer again. But not as nice as the Harbison area, in my opinion.

Directly east of downtown on Forest Drive is the older nice homes, and a decent mall with a theater complex as well.

I liked Columbia, not as much as I liked Charlotte, Hilton Head or Augusta... but it beats the hell out of where I'm at now.

Shut right on up! Have you been to Dooley's BBQ on Old Two notch road yet? Oh my lord, that's the BEST barbecue in the state. I have made special trips to lexington just to eat there (and it's a 4 hour drive from where I am now). They're only open Thursday Friday and Saturday though. Dang now I'm hungry.

I live in Blythewood. Good description. There are towns out in the country that are 10 minutes away from good shopping/decent attractions. Blythewood, Elgin, Lexington, Irmo, and Cayce are all pretty good places.

There are good people there are bad people its a good mix.

My brother has lived in Columbia for a few years there and it seems to agree with him. Apparently, he owns a bar down there with another guy. I really gotta get down there for a visit.

Thanks for the tip on Dooley's, but it's not likely I'll ever make it there. When I travel here for work I make a point to be out of town on Thursday to avoid the inevitable Friday afternoon airport delays.

I have tried Shealy's BBQ in Leesville, but *urgh*, never again.

I am from South Carolina. I am currently living in Charleston. Maybe it is just me but I always felt Columbia was a sh*thole. I never liked anything about Columbia.

I personally like the coast or the upstate of SC.

Have you been to Dooley's BBQ on Old Two notch road yet? Oh my lord, that's the BEST barbecue in the state.

Greenville SC, Henry's Smokehouse, it was called "Worlds best Barbeque" in an article by Playboy magazine (yes I do read their articles). Once you've had it, you won't argue.

Columbia is nice, but I'd take 92 degree weather in a rain forest over 92 degree weather in Columbia. That humidity makes all the difference in the world! Someone once said Columbia must be SC's armpit:Q.

Seriously though, I'd live there. You're a few hours away from mountains, beaches, state aquarium, etc..

As for someone stating there aren't any good local computer shops there, just hop on up to Greenville (2 hour drive doing the speed limit) sometime and swing by "Computer Clinic", I'll take care of you.

Seriously though, congrats, and I wish ya the best of luck. Columbia, eh? Well you've got I-26 to take you straight into Charleston if you ever get bored--and you will! Internet is the same as any other 'civilized' state. I'm just up the road (77) in Charlotte meself, not much different...though I think Columbia is hotter and stickier and more mosquito infested.
