Hello,

I have a job interview in a couple of minutes with a company in Chicago and I had a couple of questions before I possibly accept the job.

1. What is a good area to be living in?
2. How much is the average monthly cost for an apartment? Utilities? Water and so on?
3. What areas do I need to stay away from?

I will be working in Lincolnshire so I am not sure where to even start looking.

Thanks for everyones help.

At this time just bring heaters (not space) and prepare for cold weather with clothes.

Schaumberg, Streamwood, Hoffman Estates are great places to live.

Cost of living in all of chicago is enormous... youre looking at $900/mo easy.

Avoid Cicero

the burbs of chicago are really expensive. if you want a cheap place to rent you will have to go out pretty far west for it.

I worked in chicago for about a year. i took a train into the city for work. I hated driving around chicago.

The burbs are expensive, but the city's worse.

Well, downtown area (up to say 4000 north) has unparalelled night life and culture but would be an easy hour drive to Linconshire. The suburbs around that area are a good choice but some of them are pretty dull. My friend just got an apartment in Hoffman Estates for like $800 that is pretty nice. You can definitely do cheaper in the far suburbs.

If you have young kids, or are planning to have kids, move to the New Trier Township district: Wilmette, Glencoe, Northfield, Kenniworth, and a part of Glenview. Your children will have the best possible education. It is a bit pricey, but worth it if you have kids.

Chicago is one of the fattest american cities according to mens health (or maybe it was mens fitness), so prepared to buy bigger pants. There's so much good food, plus it's freezing cold half the time, so you spend a ton of time indoors eating.

I'm from Chicago, and I love it. Went to school in new york, and i'd definitely take chicago over new york. (yeah, random )

All the suburbs are nice, like Glenview, Evanston.

Since I lived in new york a few years, rent anywhere else looks cheap to me haha.. Chicago rent is probably around $800-900 a month for a decent apartment. My cousin pays $850 a month for a one bedroom room apartment with a huge living room and kitchen, along with indoor parking and some utilities(i forget which). He lives slightly north of downtown chicago.

Stay away from the far south side (there are exceptions, but yeah..).

It's possible to live cheap in Chicago, not as cheap as the boondocks but there is no requirement that you have to live in Lincoln Park or the Gold Coast. Rogers Park is a decent option for a cheaper apartment, or living in Norwood Park where I grew up is an option too.

How much are you willing to pay for an apartment? How much do you pay right now?

BTW living in Chicago is a ton of fun, I love it. Great nightlife, good food, good cultural opportunities, decent public transport system.

Try to live as close as possible to the place where you are going to be working. I live in a Chicago southern burb, and during rushour it will take me at least 1 hours to get to Lincolnshire, but when there is no traffic, it will only take me 25 minutes. Chicago seems to get more crowded every year, and rushhour is horrendous(sp?) everywhere. The nothern burbs are nice, I have a few friends that live up there. Also, you can get cheaper apartments up north, but you might not be in the best neighborhood. If you are living by yourself and you don't care for much space, you could probably find a nice apartment for $900 or so. If you do visit, be sure to drive around during rush hour so you know what you are getting into. I wouldn't recommend living downtown if you work in the suburbs, but if you are living in the suburbs it's good to work downtown.

Considering the distance between Chicago proper and Lincolnshire, I'd advise against living in the city. I used to live on the extreme north side of Chicago, and worked in Vernon Hills (right next to Lincolnshire). On a good day, it took me up to an hour to get home every night. Yesterday, it snowed. People I know that work with me and still live in the city took 3 - 3 1/2 hours to make it into work. Going home wasn't much better. I'd take a look at some of the nearby suburbs, depnding on your budget. Places like Wheeling, Buffalo Grove, Vernon Hills (kinda pricy), Libertyville, etc.

First of all - welcome to chicago.

1) Most areas around here are good - do you want to be in the city or not? What is you budget for apartments - that will tell you where to live!
2) See #1
3) You'll figure it out just by the feel of things.
