Possibly going down to Joplin, MO for the weekend. What should I bring?

Assuming I can get off work early, I'm going to ride down to Joplin for the weekend with my local church. We'll get there Friday evening and leave Sunday evening. Will be coming from St. Louis.

Not sure exactly what I'll be doing. Could be handing out supplies, scavenging rubble, who knows.

Going to bring a few changes of clothes, a sleeping bag, small airmattress, etc.

I'm going to carry my backback around, and I planned to bring gloves, first aid kit, some tylenol, bottle of water, umbrella, my camera.. not sure what else.

If you have any good ideas let me know. There's no walmart to go to down there and I'm not driving so I'll be stuck with what I have.

Your group should already have specific assignment of what you all will be doing.

It's a big city with a Mall on the north side of town that wasn't touched, just because the Walmart was hit doesn't mean there is nothing there anymore.

Plenty of water if you will be outside.

Also, multiple pairs of gloves. Light cotton and heavy leather if you will be picking up debris. Maybe someone bring a few boxes of surgical gloves.

Your coordinator should have knowledge of what will be done. They should also have received recommendations of what is needed by individuals.

Joplin police are restricting access to the areas of Joplin devastated by the tornado and the city has put a 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew on the area. People will need permits to get into the area and they’ll have to prove they have a specific reason for being in the zone.

Seriously, I hope your church group has already contacted them about showing up, as you could actually make things worse.
