I'm looking for comments from people that are running either a Seagate Cheetah X15 or a Quantum Atlas 10k2.

I'm running 2 IBM 75gxp's on an Abit HotRod 100 in raid0. I am content with the performance, but I feel like I'm missing something by not having scsi.

I am strictly using my system for gaming, and am running WinME. I won't be getting a scsi cdrom, burner, etc.

My questions are: Is it true that access times are the most critical spec for hd's, and that transfer rates are overrated? I've heard that scsi drives can load games and game levels 2 to 3 times faster than the fastest ATA drives. Is this true?

Thanks

i don't know about 2-3 times faster, but they're certainly faster. Check the benchmarks and articles at storagereview for more info

if you are worried about access time get the seagate cheetah x15.

ATA vs SCSI??? You will need to use RAID-0 SCSI in order to beat the overall performance of the setup you have now.

just for gaming? i think that you are seriously wasting your money. i would put that 450 or so bucks from the x15 plus the 150 or so from a controller card into a good graphics setup. your setup is fine with the disk speed you have right now. why on earth would you want scsi? but if you do, you can't go wrong with a AHA 19160 from adaptec and the seagate x15. this is not including the price of cables too, which might be another 50 bucks. this is a lot just for making games load faster imo. and usually access times is the most critical factor in disk speed.

I bet most of the people in this forum have more power then they need. If he wants it, he should get it. No one should criticize how someone else spends his money.

Wah

true, there are probably some people that have more power than they "need", but i think disk perf is moot since graphics, cpu, and memory make all the difference in gaming. and as far as nobody criticizing how someone spends their money, people should be open to criticism, as long as it's constructive.. i mean 650 bucks or so is a lot for 1 disk just for gaming. an investment i believe in the nv20 or rampage when it comes out would be well worth it over a disk. but if he plans on expanding this disk array and perhaps vid capture with it or something, that's different.
