Hope this is in the right forum...

Both PC's running windows xp. Not sure about anti-virus firewall software yet, as the PC's aren't mine. I will be checking them out next week, but just wanted to know if this sounded familiar to anyone...

When both PC's attempt to accss the internet they just automatically reboot. I am thinking it could be a possible virus/trojan or something. However, there were some pretty bad storms that rolled by earlier int he week that caused the PC's to fail I guess but they rebooted back up just fine. So the other issue could just be the mobo/ethernet just got fried. But I doubt it would just take out the internet.

Does this kind of problem sound familiar to anyone, or any specific virus? Just trying to narrow it down before I go check these PC's out.

Thanks.

Again, if this is in the wrong forum, could a mod move it please?

When you're getting the reboot, is it a 60 sec countdown? If so, then yes, it's the Sasser or a variant of it.

And when you say both computers... do you mean if both try to access the internet simultaneously, they get rebooted? But if individually, they don't? If that's true, then that's just ODD.

If you mean both computers get rebooted, whether or not they're on the internet simultaneously, then it's either a worm (if you get the 60sec countdown)... or your NICs are bad (but kind of odd for both computer to develop this problem now).

I would

1) hook those people up with a router

2) get their systems patched and enable Automatic Updates

3) make sure they have the Windows Firewall or another software firewall on each computer to defend them from eachother

4) get them some good current-generation antivirus software and configure it so it updates automatically, uses all its optional capabilities, and runs scans at least weekly, preferably more often. McAfee VirusScan 9.0 Professional is a two-license-per-box software and doesn't need much configuration aside from scheduling the scans, if you need a no-brainer one. I like the more frequent updates of Kaspersky myself (new updates released hourly).

5) run Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer to see what other issues it can identify

6) train the users about good/bad practices
