A month ago i took the heat-sink off my xFx HD4870 it had a really bad non reference stock cooler and was overheating. The heat-sink i bought to use with it did not have the same power pins so i never actually got to use it. Today i was getting it ready to finally put a new heat-sink on i noticed something. Apparently there is a vacant spot where i would assume a VRM or something related to VRMs is located. In order for me to fit the heat-sink i had bought for it on i had to remove the stock VRM heat-sink it was a separate heat-sink because it was a non reference design. The plate does have indents where the other spots where these pieces are located but none directly where the one that appears should be there. On the card there are a total of 11 of these 2 are out of shot. Also it looks like there is also a capacitor missing too. I know there was not one their before either. I am not sure if this is piece is missing and if i were to put it back in my computer if it were vital if it would short my computer and possibly damage other components. Anyone who has an xfx hd487A-ZZWFC that took theirs apart and noticed the same problem please comment. Also if anyone knows the likelyhood of this causing damage to the rest of my system if i were to try it please let me know. As of right now im thinking about hooking up my old motherboard and processor and seeing if it works on that. thanks. Attached is a picture of the part that i am trying to describe.

Welcome to the forums DeathlyEyes

And what Phynaz says, if there had been something connected to those solder pads then it would be visibly obvious even after the component had broke off.

Its pretty clear there are no metal leads embedded in the solder pads, nothing was ever connected there.

(to convince yourself of this, whenever you are done using the card and are ready to throw it away just go ahead and intentionally break off one of the neighboring components and you'll see what we are talking about, but don't do it until you really want the card to become trash)
