my brother is in the navy and will be around prestwick, scotland. i hope to be able to visit him. i'd like some advice for visiting/touring the area. any general tips would be appreciated, but specifically i'm looking for some:

-cheap hotels/hostiles
-tourist attractions (or anything fun)
-good places to eat
-good pubs, clubs, bars

i have absolutely no knowledge of the area, so ANY information would be great. i'd plan on staying 7-10 days. should i just hang around in w. scotland, or hop on a train and check out other areas either within scotland or nearby? i'm trying to keep this on a student's budget, although expensive accomadations will be considered.

thanks.

get a copy of lonley planet or the rough guide to scotland.

also go during august and stay in edinburgh for the festival

the highlands are excellent go to ben nevis and fort william and fife. pitlochry is nice too, you can see a salmon leap and go to either edradour (better) or the bells distillery (an industrial complex)

there are tons of great castles scattered around scotland, and excellent museums in edinburgh and glasgow. IIRC, the many bed and breakfasts are pretty cheap and offer good accommodations (although obviously less formal than a hotel). i went all the way up to skye, where the sun doesn't set until like 10 or 11 at night (crazy!). i looooved scotland.

Glasgow sucks, its all bout some Edinburgh! Last time I went I also got to stay with family in Aberdeen (Shell Oil) and even got to take a helicopter ride out onto a rig in the North Sea!!! Totally awesome...definately try to go to Aberdeen or any of the other seaside towns on the northside (the highlands over in that area also have the best Scotch...DEFINATELY go to Royal Lochnagar or any of the other fine distilleries in the region!)
