possible to use a 4.1 set for better quality 2.1 sound?

I have no interest in surround sound, but I want a better set of 2.1s and all I see these days is 4.1s in the high-end range. Is it possible to use a 4.1 with both sets of speaks in front and just have each set produce a different frequency range for better quality?
 
some people have surround sound setup, some people just have all 4 speakers infront of them

like:

speaker | speaker | Monitor | speaker | speaker

is that waht you are asking, if its ok to have it setup like that?
if so i dont see why not...it still works

you just wont hear stuff behind you in games from behind lol
