possible to use 80mm fans with 4pin power adaptor and 3pin monitor as fan for CPU heatsink?

Hi. In a few days, I will have an extra Antec Blue LED 80mm fan. It uses a 4 pin power adaptor and comes with a 3pin adaptor for monitoring speed.

I know the header for the CPU fan not only monitors the speed but also powers the fan because I do not connect any extra 4pin power cords from the power supply.

Is it possible to just Antec blue LED fan on the heatsink, connect the 4pin for power, and still connect the 3pin adaptor to the CPU header pins for monitoring (i do not need it for powering the fan now)?

As long as you've got power to the fan, it doesn't matter where it comes from.

Some motherboards may have a CPU fan detection feature in their BIOS which would not let the system boot up if no fan is detected. Using the monitor may satifiy it, if not, you can usually disable this feature.

You should be able to get away with running the fan off the 4 pin molex and running the monitor wire and a ground to the 3 pin header on the MB. I really dont see any reason to do this since the MB header should be able to support that fan anyway.

Yeah, you can do it. I've done it in the past. You just have to snip the right wires in the three pin and solder them up to a 4 pin connector. As long as you don't undervolt too much, you'll still get RPM readings.

The LED Fans tend to be a little weak in the CFM area - You should expect higher temps than just about any 80mm stock fan.
