Possible To Upgrade Win95 With Win98 Full?

Hey guys, I just got a free copy of Win98(and yes, it's legit), and am itching to upgrade to it. However, I'd like to not have to install/reinstall Windows, so I can keep my settings. So, is it possible for me to use Win98 full to upgrade Win95 OSR 2.1; and if so, is it safe? Thanks guys.🙂

Did u try typing &quot;setup /ntldr&quot; when you did setup? I did it on several older computers and it worked for me. The only time it didn't work was when I put other command switches with it.

This did not work for me, i have the same problem, have 95 installed and am hoping to install 98full over it.
Any other ideas?

i had a similar situation. i had an upgrade cd and wanted to reinstall win98 instead. so when i started setup from the cd drive, it gave me all that nonsense about not detecting win95 or win3.1. so eventually i copied the \win98 folder from the cd to the hard drive, started the setup from inside the c:\win98 folder, and was saved from all of that upgrade detection nonsense.

i'm curious as to what exactly did it... the file transfer or running the setup that is the \win98 directory.

of course your situation is slightly different. but i think it may be some of the same logic behind you errors.

I have same problem and tried to upgrade using the info on the MS knowledge. Didn't work and I was spending too much time so I said hell with it.

Anyone else know what works?

I'm trying to upgrade to win 98 using a full OEM version of win 98 over the last (most recent) windows 95.

Personally, I've used the &quot;setup /NTLDR&quot; several times and it worked for me using a Dell OEM Win 98 cd. Not sure if it case-sensitive for NTLDR, but I read that tip originally from Infoworld. But I notice other OEM full win 98 sometimes will let you install over an existing system, whereas some don't.

Yes you can. Why would you want to, unless you want to use USB. (Active Desktop is a resouce hog &amp; is buggy).

if it's retail version,
you can install it anyway you want.

oem full version mostly requires clean hd.
