Possible to upgrade cpu & mb only?

🙂 Hey Folks,
Can someone tell me if its possible to upgrade my computer by changing the motherboard and cpu only. I'm running win xp now on a epox mb with a athlon 1.2. I got 2 hard drives hooked up , full of of stuff. I didn't want to start from scratch, reformat and load everything back on again. I don't know what issues might arise if I tried to do this. Would I have to delete my present mb drivers? If so, how?
I know the best way is to start all over, but I don't want to go through all that. Anyone know a better way? thanks for your time!

If I were you, I would do a complete format. Though it is possible to go into Device Manager and uninstall the chipsets, it might still cause problems down the road. Plus a format will give you a chance to start fresh with new updated drivers and a clean registry.

But that's just me.

Last time I upgraded my motherboard, from an AMD 760 to a VIA KT266a, I didn't reformat or anything. A few months later, I'm still running fine. I'm not saying that it's guaranteed to work, and it takes a million reboots to install the drivers, but it can be done.

I've changed just a motherboard (from KT333 -> KT400 with RAID (yes I needed the RAID)) and it worked just fine.

Depends I guess. I would say it would be more likely to work if your going from like VIA chipset to VIA chipset.... Remember, if you are just going to upgrade the mobo and cpu...you're going to have to make sure the new mobo is the same sort of memory you are using now. So if you're using SDram your going to have to stick w/ it unless you want to buy new ram or a mobo that has SDram/DDR slots (the few that are out).

Reformatting is always the best way though IMHO.
