Do any of you guys know how or if it is possible to trace down a Hotmail account?

I know it is internet based but the accounts do have to be connected with a valid
IP. Don't they?

Any body have any clues?

EDIT: FYI..I think I have been defrauded....No spamming intended. It would
help if I just knew where they were.

EDIT:
Thanks for the help guys but I found a program called 'IP Address Search 2.0"

I d/l ed it and did my own search. I have traced the computer to Yaounde, Cameroon
in Central Africa, the town that they were originally supposed to be from.

So, I feel better about the transaction that I am involved in, at least I know they
aren't complete liars.

Now does anybody know anyone in Cameroon who could break some kneecaps for me....LOL

Any email client that is capable of displaying the headers of an email message (Outlook, Outlook Express, etc) will allow you to view the IP that sent the email. Just check the options of the email message.

That said, if they connected to a proxy first, then to hotmail, your chances of tracking them down are a whole lot slimmer.

Yeah, the IP in the message header is probably your best bet. Look for a line that says "X-Originating-IP: x.x.x.x.". That's the IP where Hotmail received it from.

The only way the IP would not show is if it was "spoofed" which is illegal AFAIK.

If you want to tarce it, copy and paste the header here. If you want to know because youa re going to spam someone, don't. We will have to hurt you :D

Not impossible but it is a long tedious process. First you save the email. Take whatever serious issue you have with it to court. When the court issues a release order. The offender's ISP and hotmail will legally have to release the offender's info if requested by court based on the log.(assuming it's a domestic ISP). Hotmail has information such as which account was corresponding to that IP address at the time and ISP(whom have user's personal info) will have which user account was corresonding to that IP at the time.
