Possible to set up a network of external drives for storage?

hello.

I just bought myself a rack for my audio equipment and i have several spaces left. I was thinking it would be cool to set up a storage kind of thing with rackmount hard drives (external) and get a useb hub and just add to the hub whenever i had money for a new hard drive. Would people support this or is it a bad idea? I'm thinking that power cords and usb cables could get out of controll. I want lots of storgae cause i want to rip my dvd collection one day (i'm super lazy and accessing my movies from the couch is key). I like the idea of external drives cause i dont' like fiddling witht he internals of computer, its not really my bag. I was thinking of setting up a network computer with lots of space for internal drives, and although i prefer not to do this, i would consider it if its really the best solution.

thanks.

As far as I know there is nothing like that runs off of USB...you would best of just setting up a rackmount server with a bunch of storage. I think you can get 4U cases so you could build your own rackmount unit which will be alot cheaper then using server hardware. Anything else is going to cost a lot more then you will want to spend.

If you have heard of Snap Servers I'm sure they have Rackmount units but they cost alot of money.

yeah the more i think about it, the more sense it makes to just add another rackmount case to my rack for a "server" computer. basically a bare bones linux comp with space for severl hard drives. I'll just plop one in whenever i need to/have cash to. then i'll link this computer to my manin one via ethernet. This will greatly cut down on the amount of power/usb cables need for a bunch of rackmount externlal hard drives.

I don't think it will be that expensive. What i am planning is to get a rack mount case. I think they are 50 bucks or so. I'll transfer all of the innards out of one of my older computer to it (maybe a new mobo that can support more HD's). Then i'l throw on linux and use it as a server only setup. Does this make sense?
