Possible to retrieve deleted files after a reformat?

My fathers laptop he uses for his office was filled with viruses and spyware so he reformated it and gave it a fresh install of windows. While backing up his files, he missed a folder of pictures and now he is wondering if its possible to retrieve them. Is it possible to recover files after a reformat or are they gone for ever? Thanks.

Hollywood fiction man... I remember MI3 when they blew up someone's notebook. I cringe if I had to do or pay for the recovery of that sort of data recovery service.
