possible to replace "My Pictures" menu on xp start menu?

is there any way to add shortcuts to the new xp-style start menu? as in a shortcut that expands from the menu...

i want to add a "System Tools" menu but it appears as a shortcut when i drag and drop it onto the left side of the menu.. is there any way of replacing an expanding menu from the right side that i don't use like "My Pictures" with "System Tools" ??
i googled it but didnt find anything let me know plz!

thx! 🙂

I suppose you could try renaming "My Pictures" to "System Tools."

I never use any of those childish "My" folders. I keep all my pictures and videos on an external HDD dedicated to the purpose.

i for one have succumbed and use all the childish "my folders" 🙂

either way, is there a way, using regedit or something, to change the path a start menu link such as my pictures points to?

that's all i want!!!! i can't stand clicking start, my programs and then system tools, even though its just 1 extra step its annoying and i don't like it!

peace!

I use the "MY" folders as well. You can redirect them to another drive of course.

I put my favorites on the start menu as well. You can populate it with folders, files, URLs or whatever.

You can pin stuff to the start menu, but not folders that I'm aware of (never really tried).

you can pin folders but they just get open, you can't get them to expand like a menu... 🙁

the favorite thing is a good idea though, i could put all my System Files shortcuts in my favourites and use that, seeing as i use firefox and my IE favorites is empty anyway! 🙂

You can go into the properties of the start menu & view or hide the stuff like "my documents", "my pictures", "network neighborhood", etc.

Don't know if it helps, but I like the same kind of access you do. I dont regularly use System Tools, but I do use Display Prop., Add/Remove, New Hrdwr Wiz. and System a lot. Now, I hate a cluttered taskbar and I live by my quick launch so I have my quick launch dragged off of the task bar and docked to the laft side of my screen. Its set to Always On Top and Autohide with large icons. This way I have access to it in any window and it doesn't get in the way when I mouse away. If you went that route, you could send System Tools to the desktop as a shortcut and then just Rclick and drag it onto ur quick launch. Select Move Here. I love the left autohide quick launcd. Ya, sometimes its mildly annoying when you bump it by accident and it pops up but it disappears just as fast. Really the only time I ever accidently bump it is when I run up to click File real quick once in a while. I pretty much keep all my programs in it, WMP, FF, PWRDVD, DVDShrink, MSN Mess, etc. and then I use the Recent Documents area of my Start menu for utilities, Xsetup, TweakUI, Calculator, Wordpad, Notepad, Windows Explorer, etc. Maybe that will work for ya! 🙂

XP style stinks
It's so much easier to just stick to the classic start menu
Pinning shorcuts is just so lame, when you can totally organize your shortcuts with classic mode.

Well, to each his own, but I disagree. IMO, the XP start menu is much, much more versatile and easier to use and a lot more customizable, too. Plus, I don't like My Computer, My Docs and My Network on my desktop. I use My Computer as a menu to access my drives and you can't do that with it as a folder on the desktop. Thats just me, tho. 😛

Yeah, I dig the classic control panel but NOT the start menu. The new (four years old actually, get with the f'n program!) start menu rocks.

i got it working!
i used the favorite menu and it works beautifully and i managed to change the icon too... i didn't manage to change the text though... the folder gets renamed but it doesn't change on the start menu... what gives?

is it possible to change the caption of that folder or not?

to remove those desktop items you just uncheck a few boxes
if you just need a my computer expanding menu from the start button just drag my computer in the start menu folder in explorer

I just be careful dragging folders into the start menu folder not to move the folder you are dragging to the start menu folder, My computer doesn't matter because you can't move that but with other things use paste as shortcut or a right click drag -> copy shortcut

you'll find if copy folder shortcuts a certain way they will expand in the classic menu

I like classic because I can easily organize ... anything ... on the .... first ... menu
there's nothing that the classic menu is lacking,

could you please elaborate on what this "certain way" way be?? 🙂

not really, in some cases it puts a folder shortcut that won't expand
but generally if I do a right click drag and drop and select copy as shortcut from the right click menu, or do a copy then paste as shortcut to the start menu folder you'll will get expanded folders when you use the start button menu.

ok an example

open my documents - however you get there
right click on my pictures select copy

right click on the start button
select open from the right click menu
right click on an open space in the folder window
and select paste as shortcut

it should work with the XP menu as well
only it won't be on the first menu but rather the >program menu up top

OHHHH well dude you don't need any special procedure to add an extra menu to the regular start menu... just add a folder and it will expand... i meant to the first start menu... the one with pinned shortcuts and what not...
anyhow, even though it says "favorites" using the favorites menu has worked beautifully! 🙂

True, I guess for a system tool menu you don't need a folder shortcut
but for other things it comes in handy
and if you want to add more than one folder to the first menu that pops up then classic is the way to go.

I guess another option would be to add Administrative Tools menu to the XP Start menu and All programs then you add or edit the shortcut there
both menus are linked to

Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools

two menus one location
