Possible to recover Outlook email by scanning harddrive?

Hi, someone i know erased all his outlook email when he reinstalled windows (i guess his emails were in the windows directory). Anyway, is it possible to recover it with software to scan the hard drive? I've heard of software that does it, but i'm not sure which ones do...

Edit: let me clarify, all his emails were overwritten when he reinstalled windows, but i heard about some software capable of scanning the surface of the HD to see the bits that were overwritten.

I quite intelligently wiped out many months work a while back (backup slightly more often these days) & tried every shareware w2k recovery program I could find.

Was'nt able to recover a single thing though so I would'nt hold out much hope.

Maybe he'll do better though I would'nt count on it (if its really important there are ways to recover data, though it wont be cheap), do a search on google, there are various different progs. You're looking for a file called outlook.pst by the way.

Try Directory Snoop
One of the most powerfull recovery utilities that is fully functional shareware. I have recovered gigs of stuff from clients drives.....however, if the data has been written over, the chances are it's beyond the scope of any recovery tool besides labs and many thousands of dollars in fees.
