Possible to read SMART status of HD in external USB enclosure?

Is there a software tool that can read back the SMART status of a HD housed in an external USB enclosure?

I know many tools can read back SMART status of IDE/ATA HD connected to ATA or SATA adapters, but I haven't found any that can read back the status of disks that are in a USB or firewire enclosure.
