My Verizon rep is saying I would need to use a line with an available upgrade in order to purchase the ipad at FULL RETAIL PRICE.

Apple® iPad® with Wi-Fi + 4G 64GB (Black) : $829.99
-------------------------------------------------------
Package 1 Total Due : $829.99
-------------------------------------------------------
Included Shipping Cost per Line : $0.00

Taxes and Fees : $73.66
Total Due : $903.65

Is this just a money grab that happens during the rush, or standard policy when it comes to ipads? I never had this problem purchasing and activating a new mifi device on a line which previously had voice service.

you can purchase it at full retail price no matter what AFAIK there are no contracts on the 4G service for the new iPad. Checking the site now you can't even add it to cart unless you select "month to month" contract.

I'm not. Was just giving an example of another device I've purchased that doesn't have a voice plan.

I hope that's the case. Odd that they would first insist I need to purchase it with a new line, and can't use an existing line unless it had an available upgrade on it.

Finally got it ordered, but the Verizon system wouldn't let my rep put the order through without a new 2yr plan AND taking an available upgrade from another line. I think VZW is taking advantage of the situation.

I'm wondering if I'd have the same problems purchasing directly from Apple in the future, and then calling VZW to activate it on an existing line.

if you buy from apple just buy the VZW model and you activate on the device itself. pay by month and no contract
