Possible to normalize sound output from PC?

Correct me if I am using the wrong terms here, but I was wondering if anyone has ever run into a program or such thing to make the sound output from a PC at a constant volume?

For the record I have a Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS.

Normally I would not need something like this, but like tonight, I sometimes watch movies late at night on my HTPC and some movies fluctuate the volume a lot. I am finding myself turning the volume up and down the whole movie. I'm trying to avoid pissing off my neighbors.

Any ideas?

you are talking about dynamic compression, like a "nightmode" in some receivers. What you are looking for is to compress your audio so that the softs arent as soft, the louds arent as loud.

Im sure there is some software out there, but I dont know much about it as I have never needed such a feature.

you'll often see this in the options of your movie player software. for example Power DVD has an option to "compress the dynamic range" - that's what you're looking for
