Possible to mount 120mm fan on a XP-90?

Excuse me for possible asking a very stupid question, but I've seen people mounting larger fan than people usually use. Is it possible to mount a 120mm fan on top of a XP-90 by using a mounting clip or some sort?

With an 120mm fan adaptor you might. Funneling all that air into an 80-92mm gap might not be the best idea though. Might not be completely stable stacked up like that.

I've made my own ducts using cardboard, it worked alright. Temps went up a degree or two but it got so much quieter! Then I got watercooling and all was good in the world 🙂

But it's not recommended due to the negative force that it will generate.

Do you mean the downwards pull? That's true, you have to watch out for those heavy 38mm depth 120mm fans, especially since Thermalright uses clips to hold the fans in place. I would stick with a 92mm fan, if it's too loud turn it down with Speedfan or something.

So, does anyone have some heads up using a 120mm on top of a XP-90 with that fan adaptor linked by Capt Caveman? If not, I think I'm ready to buy the hs and the adaptor.

I don't think the fan clips on the XP-90 will work with that adapter. It doesn't look like it has anything for the clips to hold on to. You might be able to rig something up that would work, but the stability of the whole thing would probably be pretty questionable. Not to mention the fact that the extra 27mm spacing of the adaptor, and the extra weight of both it and the larger fan would apply more torque to the motherboard, which isn't so good.

Why do you want a 120mm fan anyways? I can't imagine that there would be a huge performance/noise benefit over a good 92mm fan.

Yeah, I have decided to purchase the XP-120 to avoid problems in the future. Can someone point me to the cheapest place to buy it online? Thanks.

They are just shrouds that they sell on eBay for like $5.00 in the UV reactive variety.
You might have to scan under PC Fans at eBay.

You screw in the shroud like the 80mm you had and mount the 120mm on the shroud. No big.

Jab-Tech $47.95

New Egg $51.99

I'd go with New Egg if you live outside of California, and Jab-Tech if you live in California (avoid taxes). And yes, this is an expensive HSF.
