Possible to modify the shutter count on a Nikon D5100?

I acquired a used D5100 for the cost of having it repaired. I checked the shutter count in the exif info and it reads almost 90,000 shots. This seems extremely high for a camera that was released only three years ago. Is it possible that the shutter count could be corrupted or changed?

They don't get corrupted, no. If it's adjusted then its reset to 0, which means actuations are underreported.

I'd say at some point in its life a professional used the heck out of it and dumped it while it was "new".

What was wrong with it / what did you have repaired?
How much was the cost of the repair?

I had my D5000 for 4 years and put ~ 27,000 shots on it. I thought it was a lot for a hobbyist... maybe not.

You also have to keep in mind that using LiveView will cause 2 actuations per photo.

I found the camera in a pile of trash someone had dumped in the desert. The mirror was stuck down, the last owner had removed the kit lens without bothering to release it first, and the body was left exposed so lots of sand and a couple cobwebs got in it. It powered up and I was able to take a couple shots (of the back of the mirror :p ) so I figured it might be worth salvaging. It cost $135 to get it cleaned and repaired. Seems to work fine now.

The 18-55 lens was also full of sand and had the rear mounting flanges busted off so I didn't bother trying to get that fixed as I already have the 16-85.

The cost of a new D5100 is what, $350 with kit lens or something like that? With 100,000 shutter clicks left before expected failure. And warranty. And clear title (in the unlikely event the previous owner of the sandblasted D5100 goes after you). And with charger, straps, battery, cable, etc.

I'd rather have that than a repaired body, without the kit lens, for $135. Just saying. I mean if I'm on vacation, I don't want to worry if my camera is going to die on me from previous abuse, so that peace of mind alone is worth more than $135.

Well, hell. If you get a few years of use out of it for $135, then that was a good investment.

Refurbished D5100 body from Adorama = $360.
New D5100 w/ kit lens from Amazon = $696.
