Was talking about this with a friend, it's my contention that if you got someone on their knees, got behind them, put them in a good headlock, stand on the back of their calves, and did a squat, that you could pull their head off. Friend says no, tendons and such would prevent removal. I say once the grunt work is done a few tugs should take care of that, though. Thoughts?

I'm gonna have to agree that it's not possible. I think the skin, tendons and spinal cord would not be possible to rip just by pulling on them.

No

Unless you are HUGE and the other person is a pencil necked geek.

My money is on it being the other way around. ;)

Probably not possible. Many peoples heads have stayed attached when they were hung, which is a pretty good amount of force.

Not possible.
No way at all.
Tendons are slightly less strong than nylon rope.

Agreed that it would require a good bit of force, but the quadriceps are the biggest & most powerful muscles in the body. A lot of guys can exert ~2-300 pounds of force with them, without previous weight-training.

When i was studying French history in school we learned that sometimes it would take 2 or even 3 drops with a guillotine to completly sever someone's head...AND THAT'S A GIANT SHARP STEEL BLADE!!! I still don't think it's possible but I say we try it...if you live near NYC we can meet in Central Park tomorrow and experiment.

Edit:: not just you...i say everyone on this post should come.

You know, to just manage to break the neck is near impossible if the man is not very weak or injured in some way, to actually tear the head off is impossible.

You could tug away all night long, no matter if you are the world strongest man, this is impossible.

Imagine the force being applied at a 6' drop hanging, that won't tear a head off (unless you use piano wire or something similar).

Guess I have to agree with the consensus here, hanging is an especially good example.

by the chart at (it's a pdf)and after a handy dandy metric to standard conversion, we find that tendon has a tensile strength of approximately 11,000 pounds per square inch.

Go for it, tough guy :)

DUhhhhhhh..... hasn't anyone simply thought about it this way:
Since you're pulling the head off with your arms, you really think the tendons in your arms are stronger than the tendons in the neck? There are far more tendons in the neck.. the neck is much bigger than your arms....

I'd say that if anything, someone could tear your arms off with their head if their head was somehow attached.

If heads were that easy to take off, I'd think there would've been a martial art form based on it by now.

I always heard that your jaw muscles are the strongest in your body.

Maybe you can gnaw someones head off.

Quads are the biggest & most powerful overall, jaw muscles are the most powerful pound for pound.
